STELLA FISCHBACH DEPARTMENT OF MODERN ART
The collection of the Modern Art Department encompasses painting and sculpture from the 1870s through to the 1970s, from Impressionism through Minimalism. The Lotte and Walter Floersheimer Pavilion for Impressionist and Post-Impressionist Art displays works by such artists as Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, and Vincent van Gogh. Nine paintings by Camille Pissarro form the largest group.
The Israel Museum’s collection of twentieth-century art spans a broad range of creative styles, from the pioneering European avant-gardes to gestural and minimalist painting and sculpture of the 1970s. The renewed and expanded permanent collection galleries exemplify the many currents in Modern Art, demonstrating its vitality and diversity. The section Color / Gesture / Expression deals with styles of painting and sculpture that emphasize color, spontaneity, and materiality – Fauvism, Expressionism, and the School of Paris, as well as post–World War II movements such as Art Informel and Abstract Expressionism. Space / Structure traces practices characterized by intellectual rigor, highly calculated processes, and a preoccupation with plane and volume, traversing movements from Cubism to Minimalism, via the European avant-gardes of Futurism, Constructivism, and the Bauhaus. Art / Life / Dream addresses the blurring of boundaries between art, life, and popular culture. Strategies of collage, readymade, and replication bridge the creative practices of Dada and Surrealism and the later activity of Fluxus, Pop, and Conceptual art.
Some 250 works are highlighted, enriched by dialogues with artworks from other fields represented by the Museum’s encyclopedic holdings, whether African masks or recent additions to the collections by contemporary artists. The galleries reflect the exceptional concentration in Dada and Surrealist art from the Vera and Arturo Schwarz Collection, and display modernist masterworks from the Ayala and Sam Zacks Collection and the Arthur and Madeleine Chalette Lejwa Collection.
The department's holdings continue to thrive through gifts of individual works and entire collections.
